dissolving filler

What does it do?

Hyaluronic acid-based fillers are indeed reversible, and the enzyme Hyaluronidase, also known as Hyalase, is used to dissolve the fillers if necessary. This enzyme works by breaking down the hyaluronic acid in the filler, allowing for the filler to be absorbed and eliminated by the body.

  • At NU Clinic, the use of hyaluronic acid-based fillers provides the advantage of reversibility. If a patient experiences any undesirable results, overfilling, lumps, puffiness, or migration of the filler, Hyaluronidase can be administered to address these issues and restore a more natural appearance.

The ability to dissolve hyaluronic acid fillers with Hyaluronidase gives patients peace of mind, knowing that any unwanted effects can be corrected or reversed if necessary. This emphasises the importance of seeking treatment from experienced and qualified medical professionals who understand the proper administration of fillers and the use of Hyaluronidase for dissolving them when needed.

who is it for?

Here are some common reasons why filler dissolution may be necessary:

1. Overfilled or unnatural appearance: Some individuals may have received excessive filler, leading to an unnatural or "overdone" look. Dissolving the filler can help restore a more balanced and natural appearance.

2. Migration or unexpected results: In some cases, fillers may migrate to unintended areas, or the results may not align with the patient's expectations. Dissolving the filler can help address these issues.

3. Complications and vascular occlusion: While rare, there is a risk of filler entering a blood vessel, leading to vascular occlusion and potential skin necrosis. Immediate treatment with filler dissolving agents is necessary in such cases to prevent severe complications.

TREATMENT + recovery

Appointment duration can be between 45 minutes – 1 hour. Results are seen immediately but can continue to improve up to 7 days post-treatment.  Typically, patients require 1-3 sessions.  Some mild bruising and swelling can be expected and settle within 1-3 weeks.

frequently asked questions

  • Swelling, bruising, and discomfort are common after the procedure, but they are usually temporary and subside within a few days to a maximum of three weeks.

In other areas, the response to filler dissolving may not involve as much swelling, but the treated area may appear flatter or more dehydrated for a week or two. This is because hyaluronidase not only breaks down the injected filler but can also temporarily dissolve some of the natural hyaluronic acid present in the skin. This effect normalises within 2-3 weeks, and the skin returns to its usual appearance.

It is essential for patients to be aware of the temporary changes that may occur after filler dissolving and understand that they cannot re-inject filler into the treated area for at least 2 weeks. This precaution is necessary because hyaluronidase remains active for that duration and can dissolve any new filler that is injected during that time.

Multiple treatments may be required for complete dissolving, especially if the filler was injected by a different clinician. Without knowledge of the exact amount, depth, and anatomical planes of the filler, achieving complete dissolution may take more than one session. For this reason, it is advisable to try to see the original injector for the dissolving procedure if possible.

People with allergies to bee or wasp stings are more likely to have an allergic reaction to hyaluronidase, so they may not be suitable candidates for the treatment.

As with any medical procedure, it's essential to have a thorough consultation with a qualified and experienced healthcare provider who can assess your individual circumstances, discuss potential risks, and ensure that the treatment is appropriate for you. Patients should disclose their medical history, allergies, and any previous adverse reactions to medical treatments during the consultation to ensure their safety and wellbeing during the procedure.
